Trump wished China had said what was happening before

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that China kept what was happening to Covid-19 under reservation and said he would have liked to have been informed earlier to find solutions.

“I wish (China) had told us what was happening before. We didn't know it until it started being published, ”Trump said at a press conference with the team fighting the new coronavirus at the White House, led by Vice President Mike Pence.

Trump said that if he had known in advance he could have tried to find a solution and regretted that China was "very reserved" in this regard.

The American president also underlined that, when he learned about Covid-19, he ordered “the closure”, in an allusion to the entry restrictions that he imposed on travelers from China and, later, from Europe, which he considered as a “positive fact” ”.

Beijing “did not benefit” from this attitude, having instead lost “thousands and thousands of people”, he added, after admitting that on January 24 he praised the Asian giant's “hard work” against the virus.

"They were being transparent at the time," claimed Trump, who called the relationship with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, "extraordinary."

Donald Trum denied that he responded late to the pandemic after The Washington Post reported that US intelligence agencies had issued warnings in January and February about the global danger posed by the new coronavirus.

The newspaper said that both the US President and lawmakers had minimized the threat and taken no action.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic, has already infected more than 290,000 people worldwide, of whom more than 12,700 have died.

After appearing in China in December, the outbreak spread worldwide, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic situation.

The European continent is the one where the highest number of cases is currently emerging, with Italy being the country in the world with the highest number of fatalities, with 4,825 dead (793 more than on Friday) in 53,578 cases (more 6,557, a record in 24 hours). According to Italian authorities, 6,062 of those infected are already cured.

China, not counting the territories of Hong Kong and Macau, where the epidemic broke out at the end of December, has a total of 81,008 cases, with 3,255 deaths and 71,740 people cured.

The countries most affected after Italy and China are Iran, with 1,556 deaths out of a total of 20,610 cases, Spain with 1,236 deaths (24,926 cases), France, with 562 deaths (14,459 cases), and the United States , with 260 deaths (19,624 cases).

Several countries have adopted exceptional measures, including the quarantine regime and border closure.
