There are few places able to think of family holidays with this harmony. In Martinhal Cascais, as in the other hotels with the same name, everything is thought to ensure absolute rest, from constant contact with nature to balanced diet, without exaggeration and always with the possibility of prevarication. So, nothing better than entering a kind of oasis of calm that is this hotel in Quinta da Marinha, close enough to the city to arrive here in an instant and so isolated to forget that it exists.
It is with the weight of the week in body and soul that we arrive at Finisterra Spa, one of the best kept secrets of the hotel, which welcomes guests but also clients from outside. Only the description is tempting: a synchronized four-hand massage to balance the flow of energy and the chakras. In practice, it is getting into the stress of 2019 and leaving with the lightness of a fifteen-day vacation on a desert island. "It is not just a massage, but a treatment that rebalances the whole body," says Siberia, one of the therapists who welcomes us. We chose Abhyanga Sweda, which starts at both ends of the body, the head and the feet: the first one is gently massaged while the second ones are washed with rose water. Here follow the precepts of Ayurveda, a thousands-year-old practice that focuses on finding well-being through the interior. For this reason, the following massage does precisely this work, activating key areas of the body in a constant and precise movement dance with a particularly relaxing sesame oil. "Because it's done four hands instead of massaging one side at a time, you work all at the same time and in tune," the therapist further explains. Which, of course, makes all the difference, both in the immediate sensation and the following days, as we sleep and regain that ability to focus on what matters most. For the detox to be total, it is also worthwhile to go through the sauna or Turkish bath, right by the light-filled indoor pool.
The afternoon continues at M Bar, where cuisine expertly blends influences from different parts of the world, from Portugal to India, and there are options to suit almost every taste and diet, from the healthiest to the vegetarian. Facing the hotel with different spaces for the little ones, including the Kids Club, it can accommodate either a birthday party, a family afternoon, or a quiet post-massage lunch. With a menu and bar available all day, you can please everyone with pizzas, hamburgers and salads. In our case, we start with a lightweight octopus carpaccio that is just right in citrus, fresh and perfect for the winter sun, followed by a delicious quinoa salad, lentils and vegetables perfect for recovering energy. But we could also have tasted one of the curry specialties, whose fill arrives from the next table. The way back to Lisbon is slow, always with the Tagus next to us reminding us that nature is always around.
