The first time Peter Lindbergh (Leszno, Poland, 1944 – Paris, 2019) visited New York was in the 1970s. Lindbergh was about 30 years old and traveled with the first woman who was so overwhelmed by the city that she hardly spoke. during the week of the visit. He looked at the ads of the big brands that colored the streets and thought he would never be able to photograph one of those campaigns. At that time, his interest in photography was recent. Earlier, Peter Lindbergh studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, then set out to discover the inspirations of his idol, Van Gogh. And it was when, in 1971, he moved to Düsseldorf that photography caught his attention. Two years later Lindbergh had his own studio and, in 1978, was leaving for Paris to pursue his career as a photographer.
The rest of his career is immortalized in his unique signature images: a raw, stripped-down way of capturing the natural beauty of women. Peter Lindbergh photographed Anna Wintour's first cover for American Vogue in November 1988, and is the author of the iconic black and white group photograph taken on the street in New York's Meatpacking District in 1989 with Naomi Campbell, Linda. Evangelist, Tatiana Patitz, Christy Turlignton and Cindy Crawford, who also helped to retain the decade-long beauty record and launch the supermodel phenomenon.
More than four decades after the first trip, New York became the open-air studio for a dream job that is his latest bibliographic project. The concept, by the photographer, was to photograph the seven-decade legacy of maison Christian Dior in Times Square, and the brand did not hesitate to send its treasures across the ocean. Through the lens of one of the French brand's most beloved collaborators, who had already photographed Dior campaigns and muses, haute couture creations shine in the body of iconic models and in dialogue with the bustle of the city that never sleeps. The book Peter Lindbergh – Dior, by Peter Lindbergh and Martin Harrison, published by Taschen (€ 150), is a two-volume edition with a box. In volume 1 there are 165 unpublished images from the original New York session, and an introduction by art and photography historian Martin Harrison. Volume 2 is a tribute to the relationship between Lindbergh and Dior through a selection of 100 images, signed by the photographer, of French brand creations originally published in prestigious magazines.
