Kitchener student’s duct tape prom dress in the running for $10K scholarship

by ace

KITCHENER – A student at the Eastwood Collegiate Institute is the only Canadian to be represented in a contest to make graduation gowns with duct tape.

Duck Brand Stuck at the Prom Scholarship Contest challenged students from North America to create their best ball gown with tape.

Lena Hart, one of about 400 candidates in Canada and the USA, spent 146 hours and 12 rolls of ribbon to create her dress.

The winner in the clothing and tuxedo categories will win $ 10,000, while runners-up will receive $ 500 and $ 100 worth of company products.

Hart’s dress includes dozens of petals and roses with gold ribbon. A video on the company’s website shows how she created sheets with the ribbon to look like real fabric and then cut them to shape and glued the final product.

Hart faces four other finalists, whose fate will be decided by a vote. At the time of this writing, she was in third place with almost 7,400 votes.

Voting ends on July 10.
