The two "Voice" coaches collaborated to create a modernized version of the Christmas classic – full of lines reshaped in light of the increasingly controversial lyrics of the original. While the singers wanted it to be a joyful update, the recording received a huge response from fans of the original version, who feel they are bowing to the politically correct one.
Shortly after the clip Tuesday night's performance was live on Twitter, users quickly expressed their discontent.
"I wish it was the classic version and not this funny parody" one user commented.
"I had to change and ruin a classic bc from the #metoo movement. Ugh!" another disgruntled user noted.
"I watch the voice of entertainment not to hear someone's political vision. I'll miss Blake, but I won't watch anymore." a third person commented.
"No. That was absolutely ridiculous. Not only was it bad, but a classic was completely butchered to save feelings. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the original and those who offend you can kindly jump off the nearest cliff." another user commented.
However, reactions to performance can best be described as a mixture of things, as there seemed to be as many positive reactions to music as negative ones.
"You two are amazing. So talented! I would totally watch your Christmas Special. Thanks for rehabilitating this treasure of a song. I always loved the melody, but the message in the lyrics was so wrong. Thank you." one user commented.
"If this song is offensive, there are also about a million others. Sometimes it's just music." a more direct viewer commented.
"Classic version? That's just Class! Very well done. If anyone seems to bother you. It's better to step back and see this performance. Than think of some other problem to worry about. Really." someone commented.
"Finally relevant lyrics for 2019! Great work and their voices together are magical" another user noted.
In the original song, which has been approached by many artists since its debut, a woman sings, "I really can't stay," to which a man replies, "But, baby, it's cold outside." Elsewhere in the song, a woman is heard singing such phrases as "Say what's in this drink?", "The answer is no," and "I need to get home."
The Legend and Clarkson version swaps a few lyrics in favor of: "What do my friends think? (Is your body and your choice) / If I have one more drink? (It's your body and your choice) / Ooh, you really know like (Your eyes are like starlight now) / To cast a spell (A look at you and then I fell). ”
