Authorities say a woman ringing in the New Year was shot dead by a stray bullet outside her Houston home.
Harris County Sheriff's Office said Philippa Ashford, 61, died after being shot at 12:01 am on Wednesday. The sheriff's department said it looks like she may have been hit by commemorative shots from outside her immediate vicinity.
The sheriff's office said her family and neighbors were firing fireworks into her dead end when she said she had been shot. She was pronounced dead on the spot.
"We have no indication that any family member or someone from the dead end is firing a gun and we walk the streets and look up and down to see if we can find any wrappers in the vicinity and we are not finding anything," sergeant. Ben Beall, a spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office, told the Houston Chronicle.
Your body has been sent for an autopsy and the sheriff's department is asking someone with information about your death to call them.
The newspaper reports that Houston Police and Harris County Police issued public warnings on New Year's Eve, warning the public not to unload their weapons during the celebration.
