Former Glee actress Naya Rivera is missing and reportedly dead after her 4-year-old son was found alone in a boat on a lake north of Los Angeles on Wednesday, according to several reports.
Rivera rented the boat on Lake Piru, in Ventura County, around 1 pm. Her son was found safe by another sailor three hours later, according to KCAL-TV in Los Angeles.
Authorities said they were trying to reunite the boy with his family, the station said.
The search was suspended on Wednesday night after air and diving teams searched the 33-year-old actress for hours.
“There are many challenges in a reservoir this size, sometimes with visibility,” said Eric Buschow, reporter for the Ventura County Sheriff’s office. “I still don’t have details on the depth of the area where the boat was found or what conditions they find out there.”
Rivera and her son swam during the tour – he was wearing a life jacket, but she wasn’t – and went back to the boat, but she didn’t, the sheriff’s department said, according to KNBC.
FIND YOUR trend on Twitter Wednesday night, after the sheriff’s department said the search had been canceled until the first light of Thursday morning.
Some critics said the department should have searched later in the evening, but the department probably considered the safety of rescuers, as overnight water rescues can be dangerous.
